The sun is still shining here in Fort Bragg- we’ve been lucky this fall, and I’m happy we’ve had so much beautiful weather. The season at hand is a call to each of us to remember to be grateful and count our blessings. It’s easy to get swept up in the commercialism that surrounds us at this time of year, and forget all about the reason for the season, isn’t it. Tomorrow is a significant day – it’s 11-11-11, and at 11 AM in whatever time zone you find yourself, you can join many people around the world who will meditate and pray for peace, with the intention of bringing more light to the planet. We’re doing a group meditation here at Living Light to honor and celebrate the beginning of the season of peace. We’ll gather together and hold the space for planetary transformation, which always begins in each of our hearts. One of my favorite poems is by Angeles Arrien :. “Gratitude befo...

Abstract We propose in this paper an approach to quantifying the rate of atrophy of the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. This approachis based on Computational Anatomy which al- lows the computation ofintermediate MR brain volumes be- tween the ones of regular scans. This increases dramatically the granularity of brain structure information, without requir- ing extra scans. We define two spaces: i the joint brain tissue deformation displacement vector magnitude andJacobian, ii the joint polar angles of the displacement vector. Operation Gratitude. “Thank you to all who have commented so kindly and even those few not so kindly on the CBS Sunday Morning segment that aired on December 11. But the ultimate success of Operation Gratitude is due to the courageous troops who inspire all of us and to the devoted volunteers and generous supporters who come from all walks of life — joined together in common cause to put a smile on a service member’s face and to let every member of the Military know that they are respected and appreciated by the American people. My deepest thanks to each and every person who has written a letter, knit a scarf, collected and sent items, recycled cell phones, donated funds, spread the word and/or walked into our armory to lend a hand. ... Integral Options Cafe. Thursday, June 22, 2006. Gratitude -- and Beyond. I am grateful today, now more than ever, that I gave up my political blog more than two months ago. Rather than paying our teachers a fair wage so that we may attract the best and the brightest to educate our children, they would rather spend billions and billions of dollars on new ways to blow things up. When was the last time a politician spoke to what is best within us and acted with that intention. I am grateful that my new criteria for a politician are compassion and empathy, not the right to choose and campaign finance reform. A candidate who is inspired and who will inspire the best in all of us. I'm also grateful that Kira watched Remember the Titans with me today and liked it as much as I do. What are you grateful for. My Operation Gratitude Story: Nancy Pappas →. WANTED: Volunteers to Make Paracord “Survival” Bracelets Posted on. Operation Gratitude. We need over 100,000  Paracord “Survival” Bracelets  to include in each of our care packages going to deployed troops overseas; to new recruits graduating from Boot Camp; to veterans here at home, and to first responders aiding in emergency situations. Read on to learn basic details about this program, and check out  Paracord “Survival” Bracelets FAQs. Here are some of the many ways paracord can be used. Our hope is to include one Paracord “Survival” Bracelet in each of our care packages…but that can only be accomplished with the help of our volunteers. Please note: You can also Google “550 paracord” to p urchase elsewhere; however you will have to cut the cord yourself.  Kelly will not give advice/input regarding where to purchase 550 paracord, and she is not able to provide Bracelet Kits for free, even if the fi nished bracelets are ultimately donated back to Ope...

... Deb's Cup of Tea. Random musings on anything, just the right length to go with a cup of tea. Wednesday, February 8, 2012. The State of Gratitude. I've been giving my resolution to find gratitude every day some thought. It would be very, very easy to wallow in that knowledge. When I can't get a bottle of juice open or when I can't grab the top of the litter box and pull to open the box, it's easy to feel sorry for myself. But there is gratitude in everything. I'm grateful I can recycle the boxes litter comes in. I think the girls will love it. Yes, life is hard. It's easy, so very easy, not to see there are things to be grateful for even when the situation looks bleak. Not every day can I remember to be grateful for something, anything. All the way to the meeting, I kept telling myself to find gratitude in the day. It was balmy, for a January. In the midst of frustration, it's hard to find something to be grateful for. And I am grateful for lap cats and snuggle cats. I have much to be grateful for even if...

← …We Will Never Forget… An Honor to Share… →. Operation Gratitude. NOTE: The most recent information about Operation Gratitude’s Scarves for Troops Program is posted here:Â http://bit.ly/ScarvesforTroops. I know MANY of you have been knitting and crocheting all year long: THANK YOU very much. My mother and I were on a flight to visit relatives in Idaho, and I had my knitting with me, working on a scarf for Operation Gratitude yes, I WAS permitted to take my knitting needles on the plane. Started the first scarf today and will continue making them to send to your location in a few weeks. Please note: The scarves and hats we send are. “The importance of the scarves in our packages is to send the very warm and loving message that people at home care enough to take the time and effort to make something as beautiful as a scarf. We make sure that all hand-made items include a short note and an e-mail address. It can be as simple as “Hand-made with love” OR a note or letter telling about yourself, including your em...

Kim Fabrizio. Multiple Sclerosis Blog. Newly Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Posted in: Multiple Sclerosis. By Kim Fabrizio. An Oprah-infused idea: Gratitude journal. By Kim Fabrizio. I’m a huge fan of Oprah’s. She’s a significant proponent of literacy, among so many other things. Oprah, like Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of “Simple Abundance,” is also a proponent of gratitude journals. When my friend Cathy was first diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, I gave her an empty journal. I encouraged her to use it as her “gratitude journal.” I wanted her to focus on the positive vs. I told her that even on her darkest days I wanted her to write down at least one thing per day for which she was grateful. Sure, I’ve publicly and privately expressed my thanks to family, colleagues and friends. When I talk about “gratitude” here, I’m referencing thankfulness for the little things – those times in the day where you just stop and think, “Hmmmm… I’m living a great life.” Sometimes we actua...

Thus, a grateful person is sensitive to gifts and goodness in the world. Gudan: Studies have shown that most people upon making an expression of gratitude found that it contributed to feeling extremely happy or somewhat happy. A growing number of studies have linked gratitude with higher general feelings of happiness and have found that more grateful persons are more satisfied with life. Thus, whenever you feel grateful you are happier, and when you practice gratitude you are happier. ... An Attitude of Gratitude. One woman's journey to learn to live life from a place of gratitude while fighting Rheumatoid Arthritis. Things can always be worse. A pessimist is one who feels bad when he feels good for fear he'll feel worse when he feels better. I have seen it a thousand times on message boards, on facebook, even twitter over the years: "I need prayers for my son. The longer I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis, the more people I meet in what I consider "my" the invisible illness community, the longer I try to live my life from a place of positivity and gratitude and the more I surround myself with like-minded people, the less patience I have with the "drama mama's" of the world. The problem is that I don't know how to, in a positive manner, remind these folks of all the things they have to be grateful for. Labels: Blessings, Positive Living. September 28, 2009 at 12:02 PM. ... Debt of Gratitude. You are here: Home / Archives for day after christmas. 7 Comments. Which explains why I only buy lights and wrapping paper and such on the day after Christmas and why our family used the same faux Christmas tree for as long as everybody can remember. Anyway, this year I just couldn t get revved up to create another funky tree. Even though Kate is off to college and there s no way I could ever talk Parker or Mr. For me, Christmas is about cherished memories and my memories, for better or worse, are inexplicably tied to my ornaments. I think I ll spend Saturday decorating the new tree and playing Christmas carols and walking down memory lane and probably even getting weepy, but what s the Christmas season without a few tears, nostalgic or otherwise. Integral Options Cafe: Gratitude: Happy to Me. Integral Options Cafe. Offering multiple perspectives from many fields of human inquiry that may move all of us toward a more integrated understanding of who we are as conscious beings. Friday, November 30, 2007. Gratitude: Happy to Me. First an admission -- I didn't start watching 24 until last season, which by all accounts was the worst of the six seasons. Today I was in Costco, and as always I was looking at the books my worst addiction, and there it was -- the first five seasons of 24 in one set, for a great price compared to buying each season separately which I had been planning to do. So today, I begin my journey through the first five seasons of one of the best series on TV. I'm grateful I saw this set. Other things I am grateful for today: 1 More rain. 3 It's Friday. ... Gratitude. We got the time wrong, and nowhere could I find the correct time. I turned to my quiet time of meditation, hoping to find solace and the feelings of Lent, whatever those may be. ... Otterwise. Gratitude. Gratitude for being a good place in my life compared to where I used to be, sometimes, but simple gratitude is best, I think. About five years ago I heard a patient tell of a patient she knew who'd quit going to him: he'd told her to buck up, that she didn't have any organ involvement with her lupus and a lot of other patients had it a lot worse. On the other hand, when Amalie and I started going to the therapy pool which, incidentally, is where we met Alison I saw many people in much worse shape than I, so I did say to myself that all things considered, I was better off.Now it's about 20 years later, and I'm in considerably worse shape, and I still feel that I'm better off than many people. ... College of Health Sciences Distinguished Young Alumnus in Health Sciences Christopher S. Schmidt, MD, PA-C,. Christopher Schmidt is passionate about patient care. He started his physician assistant career practicing emergency medicine in southeastern Wisconsin before pursuing his dream of medical school. Now a resident in anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin Hospital Clinics, he cares for patients while rotating through the anesthesia, critical care, surgical and medical subspecialties. Whether it is with the sense of wonder and heightened responsibility necessary to care for an infant undergoing surgery, or the resolve and watchful presence demanded by the critical patient, I enjoy the process of caring for people during such a vulnerable and sometimes fearful time as during surgery, he says. The individualized process of anticipating, understanding and definitively acting on the pathophysiology of a disease process, patient by patient, moment to moment, captivates me. (1/355) Stereologic methods and their application in kidney research.

Stereologic methods are used to obtain quantitative information about three-dimensional structures based on observations from section planes or--to a limited degree--projections. Stereologic methods, which are used in biologic research and especially in the research of normal and pathologic kidneys, will be discussed in this review. Special emphasis will be placed on modern stereologic methods, free of assumptions of the structure, size, and shape, etc., so-called UFAPP (unbiased for all practical purposes) stereologic methods. The basic foundation of all stereology, sampling, will be reviewed in relation to most of the methods discussed. Estimation of error variances and some of the basic problems in stereology will be reviewed briefly. Finally, a few comments will be made about the future directions for stereology in kidney research.  (+info)

(2/355) Terminologia anatomica: new terminology for the new anatomist.

Over many years, anatomical terminology has been the subject of much controversy and disagreement. Previously, the International Anatomical Nomenclature Committee has been responsible for the production of six editions of Nomina Anatomica. In 1989 a new committee, the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT), was created by its parent body, the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). FCAT has worked for 9 years and published Terminologia Anatomica (TA) in 1998. FCAT's aim has been to democratize the terminology and make it the internationally accepted, living language of anatomy. The worldwide adoption of the same terminology would eliminate national differences, which were causing extreme confusion in instances where the same structure was known by several names. The new terminology is thus the result of worldwide consultation and contains Latin and equivalent English terms. It is indexed in Latin and English and contains an index of eponyms in order to find the correct non-eponymous term. The future goal of FCAT is to continue to improve the terminology-new structures are described, different terms come into use, and the terminology needs to be expanded to include terms used by clinicians for structures that currently do not appear in the list. Future versions of the terminology must accommodate the needs of all who use it, both in the clinical and scientific worlds.  (+info)

(3/355) Impact factors: use and abuse in biomedical research.

Impact factors are increasingly being used as measures in the process of academic evaluation; however, the pitfalls associated with such use of impact factors are not always appreciated. Impact factors have limited use as criteria in determining the quality of scientific research. Classical anatomists may be actively discriminated against if journal impact factors are used as measures of scientific merit in comparison with colleagues in more popular or faster-moving disciplines such as molecular biology. Research evaluation based on citation rates and journal impact factors is inappropriate, unfair, and an increasing source of frustration.  (+info)

(4/355) Spilling the beans on java 3D: a tool for the virtual anatomist.

The computing world has just provided the anatomist with another tool: Java 3D, within the Java 2 platform. On December 9, 1998, Sun Microsystems released Java 2. Java 3D classes are now included in the jar (Java Archive) archives of the extensions directory of Java 2. Java 3D is also a part of the Java Media Suite of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). But what is Java? How does Java 3D work? How do you view Java 3D objects? A brief introduction to the concepts of Java and object-oriented programming is provided. Also, there is a short description of the tools of Java 3D and of the Java 3D viewer. Thus, the virtual anatomist has another set of computer tools to use for modeling various aspects of anatomy, such as embryological development. Also, the virtual anatomist will be able to assist the surgeon with virtual surgery using the tools found in Java 3D. Java 3D will be able to fulfill gaps, such as the lack of platform independence, interactivity, and manipulability of 3D images, currently existing in many anatomical computer-aided learning programs.  (+info)

(5/355) Going digital: image preparation for biomedical publishing.

Authors are more often being held responsible for readying their own data figures for digital publication by scanning them at the proper resolution and preparing them for presentation in both print and on-line journals. In this manner, the visuals can be printed at the highest quality the publisher can provide and be ready for rapid electronic distribution on the Internet. Therefore, authors must become knowledgeable in the visual preparation process in order to generate electronic images that will be as true a representation of the original image as possible. Perfecting this procedure can be a learning experience and often requires some experimentation. When accomplished, the author will have more control of exactly how the images will look before they are published. In addition to the scan resolution, the type of digital scanner and software applications used are very important, and instruction manuals should be followed closely so as to understand the full potential of the digitizing equipment. (6/355) Influence of the Digital Anatomist Foundational Model on traditional representations of anatomical concepts.

A principled and logical representation of the structure of the human body has led to conflicts with traditional representations of the same knowledge by anatomy textbooks. The examples which illustrate resolution of these conflicts suggest that stricter requirements must be met for semantic consistency, expressivity and specificity by knowledge sources intended to support inference than by textbooks and term lists. These next-generation resources should influence traditional concept representation, rather than be constrained by convention.  (+info)

(7/355) Conceptualization of anatomical spatial entities in the Digital Anatomist Foundational Model.

Anatomical spatial concepts are indispensable in educational and clinical discourse, yet a system for representing these concepts has not been proposed. Guided by explicit principles and definitions of the Digital Anatomist Foundational Model, we developed an ontology of spaces, surfaces, lines and points that are associated with anatomical structures. Ontologies for Anatomical Structure and Anatomical Spatial Entity were instantiated for the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and perineum. Representing the concepts in--part of--hierarchies as well, provided formative evaluation of the classification. We invite empirical evaluation of the Foundational Model through its use for educational and clinical applications.  (+info)

(8/355) The Virtual Pelvic Floor, a tele-immersive educational environment.

This paper describes the development of the Virtual Pelvic Floor, a new method of teaching the complex anatomy of the pelvic region utilizing virtual reality and advanced networking technology. Virtual reality technology allows improved visualization of three-dimensional structures over conventional media because it supports stereo vision, viewer-centered perspective, large angles of view, and interactivity. Two or more ImmersaDesk systems, drafting table format virtual reality displays, are networked together providing an environment where teacher and students share a high quality three-dimensional anatomical model, and are able to converse, see each other, and to point in three dimensions to indicate areas of interest. This project was realized by the teamwork of surgeons, medical artists and sculptors, computer scientists, and computer visualization experts. It demonstrates the future of virtual reality for surgical education and applications for the Next Generation Internet.  (+info)

Anatomy?????

1)If someone has poor color vision, which cells in the body are affected?
2) What is the difference between cross section of an artery, and vein, and a capillary?
3)How does caffeine affect a person's heart rate and blood pressure?

please answer the ones you know!!! I really need to know!!
----------

1)Normal color vision requires the use of specialized receptor cells called "cones", which are located in the retina of the eye. There are three types of cones, red, blue, and green, which enable people to see a wide spectrum of colors. An abnormality, or deficiency, of any of the types of cones will result in abnormal color vision.

2)Structurally speaking veins and artery are the same. They are larger, thicker, and more sturdy than capillaries. This is due to the fact that they have a large transport capacity then capillaries. Their difference is veins carry venus (De-oxygenated) blood while arteries carry oxygenated blood. Capillaries are the tinier branches of veins and arteries.They must branch into tiny vessels to reach your cells.

3)Caffeine boosts blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels enough to increase a person's risk of developing heart disease over a lifetime of moderate caffeine consumption.
The more caffeine you consume during the day in coffee, tea or soft drinks, the higher your blood pressure is likely to be.

How do you know you have a good anatomy for a vertical hood piercing?

I'm looking into getting a clit piercing. I heard that a girl needs to have a "good anatomy" to get a clit piercing so nothing goes wrong. I was wondering that, and on a scale of 1-10 if it hurts. Just tell me what you know. Thank you.
----------

A good piercer will be able to tell you if your anatomy is able to accommodate a piercing of that nature so it would be best to talk to them and they would be able to tell you about the pain levels as they will have witnessed it before.

What do they look for at an anatomy ultrasound?

I am scheduled for an anatomy ultrasound on the 31st of this month. I am 35 weeks pregnant and was told to drink alot of water and have a full bladder when they do it. What are they gonna be looking for and measuring on the baby? This will be my 4th ultrasound this pregnancy. The only problems I have had is placenta previa which has moved up and looked good at my last ultrasound, so I was just wondering what this one would be for? Thanks!
----------

I would assume they are going to be doing all the measurements to make sure he/she is growing at the right pace.  Being so close to your due date they probably want to make sure of the weight, length, etc.  They probably also want to make sure the placenta has stayed out of the way so there's no problems during birth. I am not a doctor by any means so this is my guess and opinion...so I could be completely wrong lol.  Good luck and congrats!

How can I connect knowledge from the anatomy to being a dental hygienist?

for my biology class we have to connect each unit to the career that we wish to pursue.  so can anyone tell me how i can connect knowledge from the anatomy unit to dental hygiene
----------

Okay, I will try.

If a patient has poor oral hygiene they can develop gum disease. The bacteria can enter the bloodstream and some studies have shown that it can affect the heart. Patients with congenital heart disease have to take prophylactic doses of antibiotics before teeth cleaning to prevent bacteria entering the bloodstream and into the heart.

You have to take extra precautions with patients with high blood pressure and diabetes when doing cleaning because you can have uncontrollable bleeding and poor gum healing. You can see some patients have swollen feet, legs, arms, hand, etc..

For Dental, you have to know the location of the nerves to better anesthetize the teeth and surrounding structures. Also knowing the location of the nerves help you prevent hurting it causing paresthesia and hitting a blood vessel which is usually beside the nerve causing uncontrollable bleeding.

Thats all I can think of for now. Good luck and I hope this helped even a little.

When you get a fetal anatomy at 18 weeks pregnant can you record it with a blank tape?

So tomorrow I am getting my ultrasound done for my fetal anatomy and I am 18 weeks pregnant....Do they usually let you record them if you give them a blank tape? Also how long does it usually take for this scan? Do you think they will tell me the gender of the baby to? Thanks.
----------

I'm surprised that they did not tell you to bring a tape. Most ultrasound machines will indeed let you record the ultrasound if it is the scan that they are doing to determine the sex and check everything out. If you are having the scan for some other reason than just the normal 18-22 week scan then they may not let you, but it's just the normal one they do to check the sex and how baby is doing and brain function then they should let you. The scan isn't what really takes the most time.. it's the wait! If you have your appointment early in the morning you will be fine, but if it's scheduled later on in the day, it can be a really long line. Took my husband and I 2 hours to get our ultrasound. Once we got in there, it just took about 5 minutes to get the scan and then just went in for my regular appointment. They should be telling you the gender. It should be considered correct anywhere from 18-22 weeks.

Is there somewhere that shows the anatomy of your scalp and what proportional lengths to cut your hair?

I want to cut my own hair. I need something that shows the anatomy of a scalp so I can cut my hair and know which parts to cut shorter or longer. I need something that tells me to how long to cut each section so that it comes out looking okay.
----------

First off I would advice you to go to a salon but her are some tips you can use.

First, always use extremely sharp scissors. The type of shears you use is not that important as long as they are razor sharp. To test the sharpness of the shear, hold a piece of thread in one hand and let it dangle in the air. If your scissors can cut through this with ease without pulling the other end to make it taut, then they are probably sharp enough to trim hair.

Second, prepare the hair first by thoroughly combing or brushing out all the snarls and tangles. Thick hair and long hair may need to be wet first. Make sure no hairs are hidden behind the ears or nape of the neck.

Lastly, always remember to cut off less hair than what you want the finished length to be. Hair will shrink after being trimmed, especially if it is wet when you trim it. Curly hair, "cowlicks" (erratic hair growth), and bangs will shrink the most.

If you are trimming short hair, don't be afraid to bend the ears while cutting. Ears are flexible. If you are trimming your own hair, be sure you have a mirror for the front and another for the back. When finished trimming the hair, shave the remaining hair off the back of the neck with a razor or small clippers. Sometimes this simple step is all that is necessary to maintain a well groomed appearance between haircuts

What should I expect at the anatomy screening?

I will be 20 weeks pregnant and will be having anatomy/gender screening soon.  I am just wondering if there are any questions that I should be sure to ask?  What usually takes places during this appointment?
----------

The 20 week anatomy scan is an abdominal ultrasound--it's on your belly, not your vagina.  And basically, they're checking all the parts of the baby to make sure that they're developing on schedule.  They'll check the brain, the organs, the limbs.  The purpose is, in case anything IS wrong with the baby, chances are good they'll catch it now, so that they can be prepared to fix it as soon as the baby is born, or give you special care in order to make sure it doesn't get worse.

But don't worry, because chances are that everything is perfect!  At this screening, if you want to know the gender, most places will tell you.

You don't need to ask anything special at the ultrasound itself unless you have any questions about what something means or what something looks like.  Though you should definitely ask for printouts to take home with you if they don't provide them!

The only other thing you should be aware of is that some places want women to drink a lot of water and have the ultrasound on a full bladder, and some don't need you to.  So call up your clinic in advance to find out which they prefer.

Good luck!

Can you reccomend me a good anatomy software product?

I am a medical student in search of some good anatomy software to aid me with my learning. Can anybody reccommend me a good piece of software? Have you used it yourself in the past? How much did you pay?

Thanks in advance to any replies.
